No Border---- Zheng Xuewu works 2007 Zheng Xuewu was born in the Heilongjiang Province, graduated from the Art academy of Harbin Normal University.Invited professor of the North Carolina University at Chapel Hill, NC, U.S.A.and the Appalachian State University , NC,U.S.A.Visiting Scholar of the Guilford College, NC, U.S.A. and the Warren Wilson College , NC,U.S.A.Visiting Artist at Vermont Studio Center, VT, U.S.A.One of the initiators of the Asian Art Union and the China Korea Art Association. Full-time Artist & Curator in Beijing. The works this time will be shown at the Red Gate Gallery are three series: First, ¡°the Century Documnet¡±, the installation.the process of making this work lasts for two years, 120,000 pieces of newspapers from all over the world were turned into1,500 bundles which take the form of Chinese bamboo scrolls,historically an important textual medium. All these bundles show eather on 10 appropriate Ming-style elmwood calligraphy tables or in 30 elmwood boxes which are the part of the work itself.It shows the brand-new explanation of the modern culture in a historical status. Second, ¡°Meditation of Zen¡±, Chinese ink on paper.it was made by the most familiar way the artist used for over ten years ----- typoraphy combined with paint,so even the characters are very complex and there are countless places needed to be filled in.it took only half a year for the artist to finish them.The countless chinese characters are telling the artist's work process like meditation and the unfathomable of Zen. Third,¡°East¡±,some are acylic on canvas some are acylic on Paper .The raw material came from the tradidtional Chinese painting,sculpture,folk art and religious art,etc.Using the graytone to dispelled the time concept, the artist¡¯s understanding of the traditional culture in nowdays vividly emerged on canvas. And on the paper,this group of work is composed by five parts and was recreated on five folk lunar new year's paintings,they show a abstract concept of a nation by Five-Starred Red Flag images and capital letter¡°CHINA¡±.
